FRYING TONIGHT – SMYE HOLLAND ASSOCIATES HELPS CELEBRATE 150 YEARS OF FISH AND CHIPS

Peterborough-based marketing and public relations consultancy Smye Holland Associates (www.smye-holland.com) has been commissioned by Friars Pride (www.friarspride.com) – the supplier to fish and chip shops, fast food outlets and bakers – to help publicise the fact that 2010 is the 150th anniversary of fish and chips.

Research has shown that 1860 was the year in which fish and chips were first put together and sold commercially – most probably by the Malin family in London.

Now there are around 10,500 fish and chip shops across the UK employing about 60,000 people and selling nearly 276 million fish and chip meals each year. Fish and chips remains the nation’s favourite takeaway.

As a key supplier of food, ingredients and sundries to the fast food industry, Friars Pride was keen to help support the anniversary and commissioned Smye Holland Associates to assist with media relations.

To kick off the year of celebrations Friars Pride arranged for staff at a local award-winning chip shop to dress in Victorian costume for a day. Smye Holland Associates reported on the event for the media, securing coverage in national and local papers and on radio.

Louise Marshall of Friar’s Pride said: “Smye Holland Associates enabled us to get widespread media coverage for the start of the 150th anniversary year and we are now able to build upon the awareness that has been generated.”

Mike Holland of Smye Holland Associates said: “We are developing a growing level of expertise in the business-to-business food sector. This project for Friars Pride allowed us to expand this further while also engaging with the consumer media in an unusual and entertaining project.”
